The advantages of ordering your coffee online - it’s freshly roasted premium coffee - delivered anywhere in South Africa

Johannesburg; Cape Town; Durban; Port Elizabeth; East London; Bloemfontein; Queenstown; Umthata; Colesberg; Stellenbosch; Oudtshoorn and anywhere in between.

Freshly roasted coffee

At the East London Coffee Company we plan our roasts according to the orders we receive. We do not keep 100’s of cases of stock and we do not allow our stock to age. Your order will be roasted and packed within 48 hours of receiving your order. Coffee is at it’s best within 48 hours and up to fourteen or even twenty one days. Provided (bean form) the roasted beans are kept sealed in a dark cupboard, you will still enjoy the taste and aroma for a good few weeks.

Ground versus beans

Beans do hold their flavour longer than when ground. Accepting that bean-to-cup is best, our vacuum packing system does reduce the likelihood of flavour loss. We do encourage our clients to invest in a small home grinder. These range in price from a few hundred to the quite lovely Krupp’s grinder which is available at around R 700 from YuppieChef & others.

At the East London Coffee Company we take great pride in our product. Every batch is roasted by hand - we will not let a computer or a machine take over. There is no machine in the world which can adjust itself to allow for the idiosyncrasies or individual characteristics of each bean. A bean can vary from farm to farm; crop to crop; country to country and it’s the artful artisan roaster who can bring out the best in each bean.

Alan Hawkins is our chief roaster. He is a coffee lover and has made it his business to become a passionate and skilled roaster. Every single bean is nurtured and roasted in such a way as to bring out it’s full potential.

Professional shipping

The door to door delivery services that are now available have been an absolute boon for coffee lovers. They have helped us take freshly-roasted to a completely new level.

Forget the stale coffee that adorns supermarket shelves around the world! Say NO to stale coffee - say NO to ridiculous expiry dates and ground coffee which has been shipped around for weeks. We can get our coffee to your door almost while it’s still warm from the roaster. Not quite but you get what I mean.

National suppliers of coffee, coffee equipment and accessories.

How is it possible for an East London based roaster to call themselves a national distributor? Yes, we do roast to order and deliver only fresh product anywhere in South Africa. So how do we do this? We roast beans on most days of the week, based on orders that have been confirmed either by email; telephone or via our online shopping options.

Once your order has been roasted, we allow the roasted beans to stand for between 24 and 48 hours for the de-gassing process to run it’s course. You shipment is then packed into one-way valve foil bags in order to maintain freshness before being shipped. We use various shipping methods which are dependent on your own location and budget. As a rule, shipping takes between 12 and 72 hours, again dependent on the above. Even if a client selects the slowest option, your freshly roasted coffee should reach you within a few days. Coffee beans are at their best during the first three weeks of roast and hold their own (certainly at 95% of full flavour for a further three or so weeks. In particular, unopened bags (beans) do hold their flavour well. Once opened, coffee should be used as quickly as possible. This is particularly relevant when it comes to ground coffee which loses it’s flavour very quickly after grinding.

Is coffee too expensive

Good coffee isn’t cheap but neither is good food, a nice car or a good wine. If you breakdown the cost of a good brew made at home, the coffee portion (assuming one espresso shot) is, at 2017 prices, still most likely under R2 per cup. If you consider the farmer on a faraway land, shipping to South Africa; packaging; roasting; re-packaging and delivery … add VAT, the bag, label and a few other costs, suddenly the R2 isn’t so bad after all.

Delivery lead times

Once roasted, coffee needs to degas for 24 hours before being packed and shipped. Because your coffee will be freshly roasted, allow three days for the preparation and, depending where you are located, three days for shipping. Would you rather wait a few days or buy stale coffee?
